by Kevin Woster
"...Anthony, a native of Sidney, Neb., (...) began his artistic career in 1938 by spending $2.98 on mail-order cartoon lessons ended up drawing a different route to a career. He began producing sports cartoons, a choice that would become a passion that kept him busy for more than four decades.
And Anthony rarely received anything but a smile and compliment for his work, which made him a bit of a sport icon in the Rapid City area. He still gets those positive reactions from people who remember his cartoons, even though he says the style is “getting to be kind of an endangered species.”
Endangered, perhaps, but in no danger of becoming extinct. Anthony’s work has been preserved in a book: “44 years of South Dakota Sports Cartoon History.”
